The Mary and William Tighe Scholarship Fund was established to honor the legacy of Mary Tighe and in acknowledgement of Coach William “Bill” Tighe’s, continued commitment to the Lexington community, and the profound impact both have had on the Lexington-Metco program. The goal of The Fund is to provide financial support to graduating METCO senior athletes attending Lexington High School, who demonstrate high academic and leadership promise through their commitment to scholarship, their service to community, their proven team work, and who best promote those values that Mary and Bill Tighe imparted to student-athletes, through their teaching and personal example. The Fund will award two scholarships annually to graduating Metco students, who have been accepted to a college, university or institute of higher learning. The scholarships will consist of a one time monetary grant of $2,500 and $1,500 respectively.

Mary and Bill Tighe were married in 1954 and became the proud parents of six children. Despite the loss of two sons to Cystic Fibrosis, the Tighe’s never wavered in their commitment to the adolescents and families they came in contact with, or being of service to the communities, where they called home.

It was clear to everyone who came in contact with Mary Tighe, that creating a positive home life for her family was priority one. She was steadfast in her support of Bill during his career as an educator and coach, and her grace and warmth of personality resonated with all the student-athletes that were welcomed in their home.

Coach Tighe took the reigns of the Lexington High School football teams in 1975 and guided the program, which had a winning percentage of .350 during the 45 years prior to his arrival, to new heights.
